Spritural Communion

The Church encourages us, Catholics who are unable to receive (sacramental) Holy Communion, to express from the deepest affection of our hearts, in a personal prayer, the desire to be intimately united to our Lord Jesus and with one another (an act of “spiritual communion”).

My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament of the Eucharist.  I love you above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul.  Since I cannot receive You sacramentally, at this moment, come, at least spiritually, into my heart.  I embrace You as if You were already there, and unite myself wholly to You.  Never permit me to be separated from You.

BEFORE COMMUNION.  I believe, O Lord, and confess that You are truly the Christ, the Son of the Living God, who came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am the first.  Accept me this day, O Son of God, as a partaker of Your mystical supper.  I will not reveal your mystery to Your enemies, nor shall I give You a kiss like that of Judas, but like the thief, I confess to You: Remember me, O Lord, when You come into Your kingdom.  Remember me, O Master, when You come into Your kingdom.  Remember me, O Holy One, when You come into Your kingdom.  May this spiritual partaking of Your holy Mysteries, O Lord, be not for my judgment or condemnation, but for the healing of soul and body.  God be merciful to me, a sinner.  God, cleanse me of my sins and have mercy on me.  I have sinned, without number, forgive me, O Lord.

FOR COMMUNION.  O Eucharist Heart of Jesus, I wish to be united with your eternal oblation to the Father, with each Eucharistic sacrifice being offered at this moment, upon this earth.  Lord, Jesus, come and dwell in my heart, nourish me with the Bread of Life, Yourself; cleanse me, wash and purify me in the bath of Your Precious Blood.

Our Father…

Or, say the following prayer by prescription of November 24, 1922 the Sacred Congregation of Indulgences approved the following formula for a Spiritual Communion.

O Jesus.  I turn toward the holy tabernacle where You live hidden for love of me.  I Love you, O my God.  I cannot receive you in Holy Communion.  Come nevertheless and visit me with Your grace.  Come spiritually into my heart.  Purify it.  Sanctify it.  Render it like unto Your own.  AMEN.

Lord, I am not worthy that thou should enter under my roof, but only say the word and my soul shall be healed.

An indulgence of 500 days, if thrice repeated.  (129 The Raccolta 1944).

AFTER COMMUNION.  Having been made worthy in a mystical way, to partake of your immaculate Body and precious Blood, O Christ Our God, I acclaim and bless, worship and glorify You, and proclaim the greatness of Your saving acts, now and forever and ever.  AMEN
