THIS SUNDAY’S WORD OF GOD

On this special day, we celebrate twin milestones: Jesus’ ascension from earth to heaven and the commissioning of the disciples.  Before Jesus left them, he told his disciples to preach in his name to all the nations, from Jerusalem to the ends of the earth.  Then his apostles saw him lifted up and out of their sight, never to return in bodily form until the end of time.  As his disciples, let us carry on the mission of the first apostles, trusting that the Holy Spirit will guide us and empower us to be witnesses to the world of Jesus’ love and forgiveness.   

 

Beside his Gospel, Saint Luke also wrote the Acts of the Apostles.  Today we get to hear the ending of one and the beginning of the other, for Jesus’ ascension marks the transition between the two.  As Luke writes, the Gospel deals with what Jesus said and did while on earth and Acts begins with Jesus giving his disciples a mission.  As we carry on this mission, let us realize how Jesus is still present with us today: in each other, in those in need, when we gather in his name, in the Eucharist, and in the proclamation of the word.  Listening to his word now, let us be aware of his constant and enduring presence.

LA PALABRA DE DIOS DE ESTE DOMINGO

En este día especial celebramos dos efemérides binarias: la ascensión de Jesús al cielo y el envió de los discípulos.  Antes de Jesús dejar a sus discípulos les dijo que predicaran en nombre de él a todas las naciones, desde Jerusalén hasta los últimos rincones de la tierra.  Y entonces los apóstoles lo vieron ascender hasta que lo perdieron de vista.  No lo vieron más en su cuerpo mortal hasta el final de los tiempos.  Como discípulos de Jesús que somos, continuemos la misión de los primeros apóstoles con la confianza de que el Espíritu Santo nos guiará y nos fortalecerá para ser testigos del amor y el perdón de Jesús ante el mundo.
 

Además de su Evangelio, Lucas también escribió los Hechos de los Apóstoles.  Hoy podemos escuchar el final de uno y el comienzo del otro, pues la ascensión de Jesús puntúa la transición entre los dos escritos.  Tal como lo escribe Lucas, el Evangelio trata acerca de lo que Jesús dijo e hizo mientras estuvo en la tierra y el libro de los Hechos comienza con Jesús, que les da una misión a sus discípulos.  Al continuar en esta misión, démonos cuenta de que Jesús aún está presente con nosotros hoy: en cada uno de nosotros, en los necesitados, cuando nos reunimos  en su nombre, en la Eucaristía y en  la proclamación de la palabra.  Mientras escuchamos ahora sus palabras, estemos conscientes de su presencia constante y perdurable.
