Ushers
The IHMC Ushers play an important role in ensuring that the Mass and other liturgical celebrations run smoothly and that all attendees feel welcomed, safe, and comfortable.
Primary Duties of Ushers:
1. Greeting and Hospitality
-
Welcome parishioners and visitors as they arrive at the church.
-
Offer assistance to newcomers, elderly, or anyone needing help (e.g., finding a seat, using accessibility options).
-
Create a friendly and inviting environment, especially for those who may feel uncertain or unfamiliar with Catholic worship.
2. Seating Assistance
-
Help people find available seating, especially when the church is full.
-
Manage the flow of people entering and exiting, particularly during busy liturgies like Christmas, Easter, or funerals.
3. Collection of Offerings
-
Distribute and pass collection baskets or bags during the offertory.
-
Securely handle the collected funds and deliver them to the designated location or person (as directed by IHMC procedures).
4. Communion Flow Management
-
Help guide the orderly movement of people during Communion—showing when to leave pews and directing them back to their seats.
-
Assist those who may need special accommodations to receive Communion (e.g., elderly or disabled).
5. Emergency Support
-
Be alert for any health or safety emergencies and know how to respond or get help quickly.
-
Monitor for disruptions and support a peaceful worship environment.
6. After-Mass Duties
-
Distribute bulletins or parish newsletters.
-
Ensure pews and the worship space are tidy after Mass.
-
Assist with special events or liturgical changes.
The Spiritual Aspect:
While ushers fulfill practical tasks, they are also ministers of hospitality, embodying Christ’s welcome to all who enter the church. Their service contributes to the reverence, order, and community spirit that help people encounter God more fully in the liturgy.
